UCT GSB 3Peaks Challenge
6.15am Sunday, 25 October 2020
The UCT GSB 3Peaks Challenge has been held annually for 41 years and traditionally takes place on the Sunday of the Alumni Reunion weekend. We are incredibly fortunate to announce that, despite all the uncertainty, the annual UCT GSB 3Peaks Challenge will be taking place this year.
We will be holding a physical challenge, observing COVID social distancing guidelines and wearing masks. We will head from the UCT vicinity up Devil’s Peak, Maclear’s Beacon and ending on Lion’s Head BUT possibly more exciting for some, is the addition of the first ever virtual 3Peaks Challenge.
A surprising benefit of lockdowns/social distancing/virus suppression methods has been an explosion in outdoor fitness. People have been getting out of their houses to stretch their legs (and minds) or moving from their gym routines into the forests, parks and mountains. Now, wherever you are in the world, you can join the 3Peaks Challenge.
The intention is to have One, Two and Three Peak categories for those with varying degrees of fitness/time. The date for both the physical and virtual event is Sunday, 25 October 2020. The physical event begins at 6.15am before it gets too hot and to ensure you have a beautiful view! Join ten minutes earlier for a full briefing.
All details are on the online home page of the 3Peaks Challenge detailed below.
As for me, I’m Cape Town born and bred. I love the outdoors and do all sorts of crazy adventures whenever possible. I organised the 3Peaks in my year and have been involved in helping out in one way or another almost every year since. For me it is an incredible tradition to keep going, and without a doubt, the best route traversing this iconic mountain that looks down on our Breakwater Campus. I hope to eventually beat Pete Major (MBA FT 1984), who has run the race 25 times AND won it 15 of those, but I keep on getting older whilst he remains permanently 35 years old. – Steven Burnett, MBA FT 2010

This year marks the first UCT GSB Alumni Reunion weekend that is being hosted virtually. As this is (hopefully) a once-off, we are encouraging you to donate to our chosen charity RLabs in lieu of buying a ticket. Or choose to sponsor a participant in 3Peaks. Alumni reunion tickets are typically around R400. We are trying to raise R15,000, which will mean 30 food parcels for a family of five. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we encourage all UCT GSB Alumni to support this cause. You can donate here.
